“…He that hath a beard is more than a youth, and he that hath no beard is less than a man…”
William Shakespeare Much Ado About Nothing
Zeus. Jesus. Socrates (the other one). Moses. Muhammad. da Vinci. Shakespeare. Marx. Darwin. Mellberg and Metzelder.
Today I’ve brought out the big guns. And quite rightly so, as a dearth of desire has spread amongst Premier League footballers recently. None of them seem to want to grow a decent beard, so I present to you both Olaf Mellberg and Christoph Metzelder in a double-billing of FwB. Both have repeatedly expressed their pogonotrophic passions, yet each hold careers that are littered with wonderfully heart-warming highs and cruelly, desperate lows…
Both Olaf and Christoph are defenders by trade. The Swede as the epitome of the strong, dedicated and experienced centre-back. The German as the injury prone, form-lacking substitute. In part they sit at opposite ends of the footballing spectrum, however the truth is that they both found a club they called home for 7 years of their respective careers: Olaf at Aston Villa, Christoph at Borussia Dortmund.
